DIRECT / INDIRECT QUESTIONS

We can divide questions into two. Direct questions and Indirect Questions

Direct Questions

Who is she?

Where is Kerem?

What’s Kemal doing?

How did Alex score the first goal?

How long have you been married?

The questions that we ask directly are called direct questions.

INDIRECT QUESTIONS

  • Could you tell me…………………………..?
  • Do you know………………………………..?
  • Do you have an idea………………………?
  • Can you tell me………………………….?
  • I wonder………………………………………
  • I want to know……………………………..
  • I don’t know……………………………….
  • I have no idea…………………………….

NOTICE THE DIFFERENCE

  • Where is Suzan?
  • Do you know where Susan is?

 

  • How did Alex score the first goal?
  • I wonder how Alex scored the first goal.

 

  • Whose DVD player is it?
  • I don’t know whose DVD player it is.

 

  • How long has Murat been working for that company?
  • I have no idea how long he has been working for that company.

 

  • Where will she go next summer?
  • I want to know where she will go next summer.

As you notice from the examples, we use sentence structure form in indirect questions.

YES / NO questions

Direct question: Does Merve speak Italian?

Indirect question: Could you tell me if / whether Merve speaks Italian.?

 

Direct question: Is Leyla really happy in Istanbul?

Indirect question: I wonder if Leyla is happy in Istanbul.

 

Direct question: Did they transfer any key players last season?

Indirect question: Do you know whether they tranferred any key players last season?

 

Direct question: Can she repair a bike?

Indirect question: I want to know if she can repair a bike.

**Do not forget to use if or whether in yes / no questions.
